Digital wallet fraud

Digital wallet fraud happens when a criminal steals your card details, tricks you into sharing a onetime passcode and adds your card to a digital wallet on their own phone. They then spend your money without your permission.

Things to look out for:

  • Transactions that you didn’t make.
  • Messages saying your card was added to a new device.
  • Onetime passcodes you didn’t request.
  • Emails about account changes you didn’t make.
How to protect yourself

Avoid clicking on links in emails, texts and social media – always verify the website you’re on.

Treat your onetime passcodes as carefully as you would your PIN.

Check your transactions regularly for payments you don't recognise.

Set up bank alerts in your app so you know when your card has been used.

Ask yourself, could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.
PROTECT
Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve been scammed and report it to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or on 0300 123 2040.
